With the most iconic name in Grand Prix racing history - MV Agusta - and the most recognisable figure in World Superbike history - Carl Fogarty - declaring their intention to form a team and race in World Superbike in 2008, on the all-new 2007 MV Agusta F4 1000 312 R, we asked Fogarty to expand on the idea a bit more, and outline where things go from here.

When asked if the declaration made today was more than just an intention, and confirmed that they would be in there in 2008 for sure, team owner Fogarty gave a simple answer, “Definitely - if we find the money we need. Obviously MV Agusta has the product and we have the base and team infrastructure, and we both want to be in there racing. If we get the sponsorship we need, we will make it happen.”

The exact size of that 2008 budget is the big question, but when probed for an answer on how much it would take to run a full-factory Superbike effort, especially in the most costly first year, Fogarty hazarded an educated guess.

“If we are looking at having a full team, paying two top riders, then it should be around three, or three and a half, million pounds. That would be with a staff of 15 and all the trappings of a full factory team.”

Fogarty is painfully aware of how difficult sponsorship was to find (or not find, as it turned out) in the run-up to the 2007 season, despite his own iconic status as the winningest SBK rider ever. But he knows that the obvious edge this time around is being hitched up with what he called, “the Ferrari of the two-wheeled world” MV Agusta. But he denied his team had an MV machine which they were already working on. “We do not, but MV has a test bike now which is one step ahead of the one being raced in the AMA series.”

He continued: “Getting sponsorship is very difficult, but this time around it is a matter of persuading someone to get into bed with an iconic brand like MV Agusta, in a team which has proved to be very professional in the past. Money is hard to find for sponsorship nowadays but this is a massive opportunity for someone. MV is the biggest name every in motorcycle racing, with huge success in years gone by.”

What seems obvious, even if Fogarty did not mention it, is that racing an MV Agusta 1000cc four will be a very different thing in terms of potential competitiveness than racing the three-cylinder Petronas 900. The FP-1 triple had a great chassis (largely thanks to the FPR team’s own designs) but an interminably troublesome engine, even before it was hamstrung by its odd positioning in terms of the technical regulations in SBK. (Not as torquey as a twin, not as powerful as a four, it was way less reliable than any other engine).

Fogarty sees the lure of the MV name as more than just a single tick in the plus box to any potential sponsor, and he at least knows exactly what he and MV can present to potential sponsors - because he had no manufacturer support nor definite sponsorship lined up at this stage in 2006.

“I hate to say that finding sponsorship should be easy after last year, I am not confident of saying that at all. It was messy in places because we could have been running any kind of bike, in any championship, and would not have been a number one team with any manufacturer. But it should certainly be easier now that we have a high status manufacturer to be the number one Superbike team for. So my confidence is increased by the fact that we have such an iconic name as MV Agusta on our side. It is never easy. But we can’t get away from the fact that this is going to be a fantastic opportunity for a sponsor, as we will get three or four times the publicity with the return of MV Agusta, win or lose.”

At what is possibly an all-time low for motorcycle Motorsports sponsorship, it is a tricky time to be getting any new ventures off the ground in any racing class. Yet it is difficult to find an argument against that final Fogarty comment about how much publicity the return of MV to official world championship racing would generate, even before you consider the potential of the latest F4 - which got the code name ‘312’ because that is the speed in kilometres-per-hour it was reported to have hit in bog-stock trim on the banking at the Nardo test track. Or in non-Euro currency, 193.87 mph.

La próxima temporada el fabricante italiano entra en la parrilla de Superbike

MV Agusta ya está participando este año en el mundial de SBK, no de manera oficial pero si en un equipo privado, de hecho aun no han conseguido un solo punto.

Le vendría bien la presencia de Foggy y de MVAgusta en el campeonato. Más que nada porque tampoco la parrilla de SBK esté como para tirar cohetes.

A mi ahora mismo lo que más intrigado me tiene es con qué pilotos correría Fogarty (supuestamente dos pilotos "top").

Y sí, estoy de acuerdo, Fogarty siempre da miedo.

Kenny Noyes contó durante la retrasmisión del domingo pasado, que uno de los pilotos de este equipo sería Neil Hodgson y que para el segundo piloto se estaban barajando diferentes nombres, entre ellos el de Fonsi Nieto.

Foggy ya estuvo a punto de formar un equipo con MV para esta misma temporada, pero el proyecto al ser tan precipitado y no encontrar un patrocinador fuerte la cosa se postpuso para 2008.

Creo que había un hilo por ahí que ya hablada de eso...

Pos no se que tanto ya que las ducati tb tienen muchisima relacion con ferrari, de todas maneras creo el equipo ejorara bastante y con dos pilotos decentes mas aun ya que el equipo actual no esta al nivel de los oficiales al menos lo que vi yo en valencia

Pos a mí también me suena que entre ellos habían saltado chispas. Claro que no sería la primera vez - ni la última - que los intereses acercasen a enemigos - aparentemente - irreconciliables  :

Actualmente Neil Hogson tiene un contrato de probador con Ducati, y precisamente para probar la "futura" 1200, a la cual le saldrán muchos novios, si al final lo consiguen. Todos damos por hecho de que Lanzi no tiene para el 2008 el sillón asegurado en Ducati, pero de momento está ahí y de aquí a final de temporada si consigue podiums, a lo mejor sigue, no hay que olvidar que es Italiano y eso tiene a la fuerza un peso específico en la Marca. De momento hay muchos novios para esa posible 1200... y como no nuestro Rubén también.
