LA preview del Airwaves Ducati

Citar
The Black Mint Airwaves Ducati team head to round 13 of the British Superbike championship at Brands Hatch this weekend lying first and third in the title race. The 2006 title will be decided in a double points header at the Kent circuit on Sunday.

In a dramatic penultimate round at Silverstone two weeks ago Gregorio Lavilla achieved two second places and former championship leader, Leon Haslam had a day of mixed results, failing to finish the first race but coming 3rd in the second. Those results mean that Greg goes into this weekends finale with 377 championship points and a slender 1 point lead over Kiyo, with team mate Leon only 8 points behind on 368.

The decision to award double points for this round was taken after persistent rain resulted in round 5 at Mondello being cancelled. With only 9 points separating the top 3 riders it will be a head to head battle between the two Ducatis and Kiyos Honda for the 2006 BSB title.

This time last year the team headed to the final round first and fourth in the championship and after an outstanding display of top quality riding and a set of one-two finishes Gregorio Lavilla was crowned the 2005 British Superbike champion. Back then he made it clear how important it was to him to win the title saying, "It maybe British Superbikes but I am thinking of it as a World Superbike Championshipthat's how much this Championship means to me." Both riders have similar sentiments about the title this year and are excited about what is sure to be a sensational finish to the season.

The defending champion Lavilla said, I am really looking forward to racing at Brands Hatch this weekend, leading the championship going into the last round is obviously a good place to be, even if it is by 1 point! It wont affect my preparation though; I will go there to put in the best performance I can and hopefully regain the title, but I know it is going to be a very competitive weekend. I have great memories from this time last year when I took the title but I was much further ahead then and there are very different pressures on us all this year, especially with the double points, but I cant wait to get started.

Making it clear that he has put the disappointment of his DNF at Silverstone behind him Leon Haslam commented, I made a mistake in the first race at Silverstone which cost me a finish and the championship lead but I have forgotten about that now and I am looking forward to Brands Hatch. It is going to be a really exciting weekend for the fans especially as the double points mean it will go down to the final race. There is going to be such a good atmosphere, I think it will definitely be the most exciting racing of the year.

Y la del HM Plant Honda

Citar
HM Plant Honda rider Ryuichi Kiyonari makes his way to Brands Hatch circuit this weekend (30 Sept/1 Oct) for the final round of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship in search of Championship glory.

The 24-year-old rider lies second in the overall standings, one point shy of series leader and current champion Gregorio Lavilla, and arrives at the world-famous Kent track determined to clinch the coveted British championship title aboard his Michelin-shod Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade, and if successful, he will be the first-ever Japanese rider to do so.

So far this season, the series has been action-packed from start to finish and has witnessed three riders top the Championship standings, Kiyo, Lavilla and Leon Haslam. There are now only nine points separating the trio and all three are in the running to claim the Championship title this weekend.

Kiyonari currently has a tally of ten victories and if he puts in a repeat performance of two-weeks ago at Silverstone, a double win, he will not only equal his tally of 12 victories of last year but he will lift the 2006 British Superbike crown.

The action will also be intensified this weekend with the double points scenario. Earlier in the year the Mondello round was cancelled due to poor weather and as a result it was decided that the final round would carry a maximum of 50 points for each race.

While Kiyo will be solely focussed on returning to Japan as the newly crowned British Superbike Champion, Sheffield-based Karl Harris will also be looking to finish his season on a high-note. So far this year, Harris has visited the rostrum on six occasions, with four second and two third place finishes. Ideally, he would like to finish by scoring his elusive BSB victory but is also conscious of the fact that he may well play an important role in keeping Lavilla and Haslam off the rostrum at the 2.62-mile track.

In the National Superstock Championship riders John McGuinness and Steve Brogan will also be bringing their year to a close aboard their HM Plant Honda CBR1000RR Fireblades. McGuinness and Brogan currently lie in tenth and 11th places respectively and will be looking to consolidate their points’ haul at the famous GP track.

Ryuichi Kiyonari: “Obviously all I want to do this weekend is win, it means a great deal to me and the team. Everyone has worked very hard all season and to win the Championship means everything. It is as close as it can get, we have all won races and led the Championship, the only thing that is certain this weekend is that it will be some of the best racing the fans have seen this year.”

Karl Harris: “I will be riding as hard as ever this weekend, it has been a good year but I would still love to win at the weekend. It would also be great to see Kiyo win the Championship this year and then it will be celebrations all round.”

Saludos.

It was a positive start to the final round of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship for the Airwaves Ducati team today at Brands Hatch. Leon Haslam recorded the fastest time of the day with current championship leader and birthday boy Gregorio Lavilla in fifth.

In a wet first practice both Ducati 999F06’s had difficulty finding their optimum settings, finishing the session 11th and 12th. With rain continuing to fall sporadically throughout the day afternoon practice was also declared wet. However, having established a good set up this morning, both riders improved their times dramatically early on. Leon recorded the quickest time of the day, 1:33.963, mid way through the session to take the lead. He was the only rider to break the 1:34 barrier but team mate Gregorio Lavilla was only 0.54 seconds behind with a fastest time of 1:34.506 when the second 50 minute session came to an end.

Both Airwaves Ducati riders were conscious of how the weather is likely to play a key part in the results this weekend, and after a quick chorus of Happy Birthday from his mechanics, defending champion Gregorio Lavilla commented,

“This morning we tried a number of different tyres and we had chosen the best one for this afternoon which worked really well and felt very good. We had a different set up this afternoon which I felt more comfortable with than I had felt this morning but the conditions were changing every lap which made it very difficult. Today the rain was stopping and starting and if conditions are like this the race will be a gamble for everyone. We will work to get the best set up we can and hopefully that will mean a good performance in qualifying tomorrow and especially the races on Sunday.”

Currently in third position in the championship Leon Haslam was delighted that he recorded today’s quickest time saying,

“This morning we struggled with the set up but we knew what we had to do to improve for this afternoon which we did. Obviously getting the fastest time of the day is great and I am now confident with the rain set up on my bike. I have checked out the weather and it looks as though we are due for rain on Sunday but I am now confident for those conditions but I think it will be the weather that will play the biggest part in the results this weekend. Brands Hatch is my favourite track so I am looking forward to getting on with qualifying tomorrow and hopefully winning the Audi, then I will focus on Sunday’s races.”

Qualifying for the final round of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship starts tomorrow, Saturday September 30th, at 1.50pm.
